Why host with Daniel Romney?

Do you have absolutely no idea what “hosting” even means? At one point I was just like you. I didn't know what hosting meant, how to register a domain name, or even what “http” meant.

I have learned, from the ground up, what hosting is, how to do it, and what really matters when it comes to hosting.

A no-nonsense approach – I get you what you need

Many of the features that most hosting companies push, don't even matter. In all reality, most people won't need 10gb of space, you don't need to pay a lot of money for email, and you don't need an account management page that makes you want to shoot your web browser every time you use it. I get you what you need simply and easily, and it only takes a few minutes to set up.

What if I want something more advanced?

My servers support PHP (available PHP modes: mod_php, FCGI, CGI and SuPHP), Ruby, shell access, SSL, and many other options.

How does web hosting work?

The web pages of your website must be both accessible and locatable. You make it accessible by putting it on a special kind of computer (a “server”) that is connected to the internet and registered as a server.

You make your website locatable by obtaining a numerical address for it from an agency (ICANN or one of its sub-delegates) that handles all requests for internet addresses. IP addresses look like this, 192.168.1.1 or 202.202.56.2.

Then each time your website name is typed into a computer, it gets paired with that numerical address, and a question goes out over the internet asking “What server is the “host” for the website that has this address?"

The server that hosts your information responds, a connection is established, and the information exchange begins.

“Web hosting” at its simplest is providing 1)space on a server and 2)internet connectivity. It can also provide database support, application development platforms (PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, etc.), and service applications such as email or a web content management system.
